Julio Cochoy was born and raised in his rural Maya K’iche community in Guatemala in 1965. His childhood, filled with: love, tenderness and compassion, was impacted by traumatic events of the “Civil War” (1960-1996). Violence and terror affected his family and community. As a consequence, Julio filled his life with bitterness, impotence, sadness and above all deep hatred against the perpetrators. But over time Julio began a process of healing the trauma that began in his own community. Together with the families affected by the same events, he published their stories in the book: “Voices Breaking the Silence of Utatlán” supported by a United Nations program. The following healing actions led him to understand and practice forgiveness for the perpetrators. So now his mission is to share his “Journey from Hate to Hope” with the goal of consolidating his own process and generating hope for people living with trauma. Julio has resumed the path of joy, peace and love.
