When my Liam was young and full of youthful energy, I found myself calling out frequently as I struggled to catch up, “Walk, Liam! Gentlemen walk indoors.”
I still call to our lovely, exuberant young people, “Walk, Dear Ones. The Beloved Community walks indoors.” It’s more UU and less binary.
What would Easter be without our beautiful young ones playing on new playground and hunting for colorful eggs? How forlorn we would all be without them. Intergenerational diversity makes us fuller, more enriched humans.
Look around on Sunday and ask yourselves who is missing from our beloved community? What kinds of diversity are we lacking? Who might find UUism to be a place of solace and empowerment if only they felt invited and welcome? Who by bringing their racial and cultural identities, their non-binary experiences, their trangender narratives might enrich UUFEC and make us more the world-changing community we aspire to be?
We have much to feel good about, and there is much growing yet to do!
We may usually walk indoors, but maybe it’s time for a leap or two!
In wisdom and grace,
Rev. Ruth
