I watched a video about how hermit crabs in Belize come ashore together periodically for an RV swap. They actually line up according to size and when sufficient neighbors are assembled, the swap begins. The largest pulls its abdomen out of its shell and moves into to a bigger empty one. Then the next crab pulls out and takes the shell just abandoned. So on down the line it goes.
I envy the simplicity of this system. Everyone has a shell they no longer need and everyone needs a new shell. We humans are not nearly so elegant or practical in our real estate ventures.
Thinking of the thousands who have lost their homes in recent days to fire, flood and earthquake, and remembering those in our area who are living on the streets, let us remember how our free faith calls us to help our neighbors. Don’t forget to bring food for our curb-side pantry. Our neighbors are relying on it more often these days. And check out the projects of our Social Justice Committee to see where you can help.
We humans need each other!
In wisdom and grace,
Rev. Ruth
