Think about the last time you were being your best self. You know, when you were doing exactly what you were supposed to be doing and giving it your genuine “all”!
It may have been a big event or a small task. It may not have felt good, or maybe it did. Whatever the context, you were being true to your beliefs, being authentically “you” and knowing, however things worked out, you did the absolute best you could do!
Today I cut my 19-yr-old son’s fingernails. It’s tricky and takes more effort and patience than you might think. He can’t control his muscles well, and he remembers that sometimes, if I make a mistake, it hurts. So he tends to pull back as I cut and sometimes yanks his hand away, and he laughs because he likes to tease Mama and get one over on me when he can. So the task tries my eyesight, my reflexes and manual dexterity, and mostly my patience. After nineteen years, it’s as challenging as ever.
Today, I got it right. We both came out of it unscathed and smiling. I kept my cool and we both laughed when we were done. Angus is always fully human. His collection of disabilities make him unable to be anything but his most authentic self at all times.
For me, it takes more effort – a lot more! So when I realize that I am in the zone of being my best self, well that’s a little miracle in my day. I try to take note, and I aspire to do it again, as often as I can.
May you each live out of your best selfhood this week!
In wisdom & grace!
